  • Women of Valor

Women of Valor: a Women’s Group Studying Contemporary Christian Works of Women Writers and Scholars

Women of Valor is a women’s study group that focuses on books written by contemporary Christian women writers and scholars beginning with Rachel Held Evans, one of the most important Christian writers, speakers, and advocates of our times. We began with her Year of Biblical Womanhood: How a Liberated Woman Found Herself Sitting on Her Roof, Covering Her Head, and Calling Her Husband Master and followed with Evolving in Monkey Town: How a Girl Who Knew All the Answers Learned to Ask the Questions and then Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again (as well as other works). Evans’ careful scholarship, sense of humor, compassion, and engaging narrative voice have found a special place in our lives and spiritual journeys. We have continued with other writers and their works, including Consider the Women: A Provocative Guide to Three Matriarchs of the Bible by Debbie Blue; Native: Identity, Belonging, and Rediscovering God by Kaitlin Curtice, and Accidental Saints: Finding God in All the Wrong People by Nadia Bolz-Weber.

We are also a service group. We have provided activity packets for OPTIONS’ clients, toys and games to the Methodist Children’s Home, Prayer Blankets to FUMC Senior graduates, sent notes to Veterans in Louisiana’s Veterans Home, notes and activity packets to children at FUMC, and supported the Wesley Center Food Bank as well as participating in various church and community activities.

We meet every other Wednesday at 6pm for discussion, usually at a local coffeehouse, often followed at 7 with a meal at a nearby restaurant. All women are welcome. For more information you may contact Becki Bradford (beckilah@hotmail.com) or Karen Williams (drkarenlwilliams@gmail.com).

  • Wing and a Prayer Players

Wing and a Prayer Players is a musical theatre ministry of the church that produces an annual summer musical, usually, in mid-July, where anyone from age 5 to 105 can participate without having any previous theatrical experience, as it wasn’t a requirement to be a disciple of Christ, or having to auditions. No one has to audition, since Jesus didn’t ask his disciples to. Many roles will be doubled and triple cast to give as many people as possible a chance to shine on stage. Roles will be assigned with priority to church members first, those who have participated before, and then on our ability to honor specific requests. This will not always be possible. Christ believed that ALL had the right stuff to follow him. Therefore EVERYONE in our show is a STAR!! Lasting memories and friendships develop as part of this family-oriented fellowship. Come be a part of this exciting ministry adventure.
